Made in America Holiday: Are You In?

Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Christmas… perhaps… means a little bit more.

I am pretty much a Grinch when it comes to Christmas gifts. I don’t want them, I don’t need them and I certainly don’t want to run around trying to find something for my loved ones that they don’t already have—this includes my three darling kids. They “need” nothing.

Dave Schiff, Scott Prindle and John Kieselhorst, founders of Made.

The National Retail Federation estimates that the average American will spend $700 on holiday gifts this year. They reported that if we spent the total of $465 billion of holiday expenditures entirely on US made products, it would create 4.6 million jobs here at home. ABC News is challenging each of us to spend just $64 on American-made goods during our holiday shopping this year that would result in 200,000 new American jobs. If Christmas must come with ribbons and tags, I think that’s a gift worth giving!

This year I spent my $64 on two Chair Amigos, completely made in the USA. Do the lucky undisclosed recipients of the Chair Amigos “need” them? No, but it will provide added comfort for them at baseball and soccer outings, and I am comforted knowing I did my part to create more American jobs this year. The concern for Made in America goes beyond the holiday season, as well. Earlier this year three executives from a major ad agency, Crispin Porter Bogusky, broke away to form Made, an agency billed as the first marketing firm focused on supporting a resurgence in American manufacturing. The trio says they will specialize in brand-building and communications efforts to help U.S. companies better compete against global rivals. They state, “This is a mission. More than 5.5 million U.S. manufacturing jobs have been lost or outsourced since 2001, yet if the average American spent 1% more on American-made goods and services, it would create 250,000 new jobs. We feel like we can help make that happen and more.” See mademovement.com for more on them.

From all of us at Gerard Marketing Group, have a wonderful holiday season, however you celebrate, whatever the reason!
