Design Matters

As the principal of Gerard Marketing Group, I am a fan of great design. When it comes to everyday living, subconsciously all people appreciate good design in the things that surround them. Whether it’s a room in your home or a home page, people derive a feeling from their visual surroundings.
Social image sharing sites like Pinterest and Fancy are great examples of the appeal of great design to the masses. In 2011 Pinterest was the first to not use traditional Web building blocks and put web content into sticky-note sized blocks users can organize onto pinboards. The content is primarily visual versus written. Pinterest hit 11.7 million unique monthly U.S. visitors, crossing the 10 million mark faster than any other standalone site in history in February. is a social image sharing site now attaining much hype because Mark Zuckerberg recently joined. Fancy is also a pin board, but has the added feature of being able to purchase each listing directly from them–their funding source. Pinterest allows users to click through to purchase from the source, but they have yet to figure out a major revenue stream.

Fancy has a more upscale look and feel to it, touting celebs that are on it and the products they love—the Google+ of social image sharing. Like Facebook, Pinterest was out there first, so it would be tough to surpass them as they are now the third most popular social networking site in the world.

Ranking based upon referral traffic and daily active users:

If your company sells products online, Pinterest cannot be ignored in your marketing plan. A Shopify analysis showed that purchases made from a Pinterest referral spend twice as much as those coming from Facebook or Twitter.
